Television news bombards us with images of global destruction, famine, disease, and wars. It is no wonder we despair at the future mankind is forging for itself, one filled with hopelessness and religious fanatics hiding behind guns, and egotistical politicians armed with nuclear bombs. However, what the media does not show is a modified trend amongst the citizens of the world - a demand to dismiss aid and instead seek trade; rescue to liberation; a change in mindset and of taking responsibility, teaching other like-minded individuals by example. Third-world nations are rebuilding their lives one brick at a time, bringing them into the 21st century.
As a reporter I travel to many of these countries - those with just emerging markets - and have seen this unreported thread as a constant in all of them and cannot help but wonder why the media downplays these successes; and why, in all their wretchedness, these people have such an unwavering belief in God. Being somewhat of a God sceptic myself I begin to question my own beliefs in His existence or if this is purely a need for the destitute to believe in some form of greater power.
I speak of these encounters and voice provocative thoughts in The Renaissance Writer, an autobiography to be published in 2008.
